What does an Odoo implementation actually cost in Malta?
What does an Odoo implementation actually cost in Malta?
Most articles with this title exist to get you onto a discovery call. This one exists because we got tired of watching Maltese businesses budget for an ERP project with no idea whether the right number was €8,000 or €80,000 — and then treat every quote they receive as either suspiciously cheap or outrageously expensive, with no framework for telling the difference.
So here are the actual numbers, the actual bands, and the actual things that move the price. If you read this and conclude that Odoo isn't for you, or that our price is too high, that's a good outcome. Bad-fit projects are expensive for everyone.
There are three separate costs, and people conflate them constantly
Almost every confusing conversation about Odoo pricing comes from mixing up three things that behave completely differently.
1. The Odoo subscription (licence). This is paid to Odoo SA, not to your partner. It's per user, per month, and it's the smallest number in the project.
2. The implementation. This is paid to your partner. It's a one-off project cost covering design, configuration, data migration, development, training and go-live support. This is the big number.
3. Ongoing support and maintenance. An annual or monthly commitment after go-live. Small relative to implementation, but it runs forever, so it matters more than people expect over five years.
Treat them as one figure and you'll get the business case wrong.
Four things nobody tells you until renewal:
- The advertised price is an introductory rate. Odoo's headline figure is a 12-month introductory discount on the users you initially order; when that period ends the subscription renews at standard list, roughly 25% higher. Build your business case on the renewal number. We do, in every proposal we write.
- Monthly billing costs more. Committing annually saves roughly 20%.
- Only internal users count. Customers viewing a portal or paying an invoice cost nothing. If you're worried about giving 200 clients visibility of their tickets or statements, don't be — that's free.
- Custom is not optional for everyone. If you need Odoo Studio, multi-company, the external API, or hosting on Odoo.sh or on-premise, you're on Custom. Most of our implementation clients end up there, because integration with an existing system requires API access.
Prices change. Check odoo.com/pricing from a Maltese connection before you commit to a number, because Odoo shows you a price based on where you're browsing from.
What actually drives the number up
In rough order of impact:
Data migration. Consistently the most underestimated line in ERP. Not the import itself — the reconciliation. Your customer list has three versions of the same company. Your stock quantities don't match the shelf. Your opening balances don't agree to your last audited accounts. Somebody has to fix that, and it's billable either way; the only question is whether it's your team's time or ours. Cleaning your own data before kickoff is the single most reliable way to reduce a quote.
Customisation you asked for versus process you won't change. Odoo does about 80% of what most businesses need out of the box. The cost is in the remaining 20%, and a meaningful share of that 20% is process that exists because a previous system forced it, not because the business needs it. A good partner will push back on some of your requirements. That pushback is worth money to you.
Number of interfaces. Every integration is a small project with its own error handling, monitoring and failure modes. Two integrations cost more than twice one.
How many people need training, and how tolerant they are of change. Twelve users in one office is a different project from twelve users across three sites and two shifts.
Whether anyone on your side owns the project. Projects with a decisive internal owner finish faster and cheaper. Projects where every decision waits for a committee accumulate cost quietly, in rework and idle time.
What we charge for that some partners give away
Solution design. We charge for fit-gap analysis and design as a discrete, paid deliverable. We think a free scoping exercise produces either a padded estimate or an optimistic one, and both hurt the client. Our design deliverable is yours to keep and take to another partner if you want to — that's the test of whether it was real work. There's a longer piece on why.
Ongoing support. Our Odoo Care Plan is an annual fixed fee set at a percentage of your annual Odoo subscription. It covers named support access, response time commitments, maintenance of custom modules through Odoo version upgrades, proactive monitoring of releases that affect you, a block of included administration hours, and preferential rates on additional work.
That last point matters more than it sounds. Odoo releases a major version every year. Custom modules do not upgrade themselves. If nobody owns that, you'll be told in three years that you're stuck on an old version and it'll cost five figures to move.
How to get a quote you can actually trust
Ask for it broken down by phase, with each phase's deliverables and exit criteria written down. Ask what is explicitly not included. Ask what happens to the price if a gap is discovered in week six. Ask who does the work.
If a quote is a single number on one page, it's a guess. It might be a good guess. But you have no way to know, and neither does the person who wrote it.
We publish our approach and our rates because we'd rather have a shorter, better-qualified conversation than a long one that ends in a mismatch. If you want to test that, send us your requirements — we'll tell you which band you're in before we ask you for anything.
Frequently asked questions
Is Odoo cheaper than SAP or Microsoft Dynamics for a Maltese SME? Almost always, yes — on licence, and usually on implementation. The gap narrows if your requirements are genuinely complex, because complexity costs the same regardless of platform.
Can I use the free Community edition? Yes. It's genuinely free and open source. You lose Studio, some accounting features, and Odoo's own support, and you take on hosting, upgrades and maintenance yourself. For most Maltese SMEs the subscription is cheaper than the internal time Community demands.
Do you charge for the initial conversation? No. We charge for design, not for finding out whether we're a fit.
